One method of slowing down the growth of gangs is to "focus on gang recruitment" (University of Houston, 2003, p.178). Indeed, the Bloods can be weakened if in fact law enforcement would go to high schools and educate youth as to specific things to look for as it relates to gangs. Intervention by schools of suspected gang members should be a priority. Simply prohibiting gang colors in schools does nothing but exacerbate the problem. The solution must be initiated at the public school level as this is where potential recruits are generally found. When gangs were first created, they would take their names form the neighborhoods to which they were attached (Siegel, Welsh & Senna, 2005). This was true early on, but since the 1980s, gang memberships would expand nationwide (Siegel, Welsh & Senna, 2005). One might look at this phenomenon as a product of increased communications and transportation. East coast and west coast gangs claim territory, but this is still much bigger than the gangs that were only aligned with one city or neighborhood. One example of prominent gangs are the Bloods and the Crips, both originating in Los Angeles (Siegel, Welsh & Senna, 2005). Both gangs mentioned expanded to the point where now there are more than eleven hundred gangs located in one hundred and fifteen cities nationwide (Siegel, Welsh & Senna, 2005).
