This was certainly true of Ralph Ellison (1913-1994), a writer whose real-life geographical locations provided the physical settings for his most famous novel Invisible Man and his short stories and his personal experiences represented his own life dramatic narrative. Named after white American author and Transcendentalist philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson, Ralph Waldo Ellison was born in Oklahoma City on March 1, 1913, the first of two sons to a working parents Lewis and Ida Ellison. After a freak work-related accident killed Lewis Ellison when Ralph was three and his mentally retarded brother Herbert was only a baby, whatever upward mobility the family might have enjoyed because of their fathers education seemed permanently stalled (Allen 24). Ida Ellison was forced to take menial hotel custodial jobs to take care of herself and her children, something which deeply humiliated her proud eldest son (Allen 24). In an article entitled "The Visible Ralph Ellison," Brooke Allen writes, "Ellison had always been driven by rage" (24). The author himself admitted in one of his essays, "I was constantly fighting until I reached the age when I realized that I was strong enough and violent enough to kill somebody in a fit of anger" (Allen 24). There is an unsettling undercurrent of violence that is evident throughout Invisible Man that the narrator struggles valiantly to control within himself as revealed in his observation, "Most of the time...I am not... overtly violent" (Ellison 5).
