With the primary influence being that of popular culture, overweight individuals are faced with difficult choices when it comes to proper food choices and weight loss programs. Even though the market is inundated with far too many diet choices, there seems to be a resurrection of late of one particularly controversial diet plan, which advances the idea that a high protein, low carbohydrate lifestyle equates to good health, elevated energy and considerable weight loss. Educating overweight individuals about the importance of proper nutrition is a difficult task, particularly in light of such purported healthful and safe weight loss programs as the Atkins diet. The primary component of the Atkins diet is a tremendously high consumption of protein. While protein is, indeed, mandatory for sustained health, to consume it to the exclusion of also consuming appropriate amounts of carbohydrates is going against the bodys fundamental composition. One can clearly see the blatant discrepancy when comparing the recommended percentage of protein in the Atkins diet to that of a suggested balanced diet as presented by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
