indicates that history is nothing more than biography because it belongs to the people, is the people, and is comprised of many experiences possessed by people. Without the individual, and their biography, history does not exist. The following paper examines why Emerson sees history as biography. History as Biography: Emerson When one thinks of history they envision many events, many people, many conditions. For example, when a person envisions the history of WWII there are many parties that were involved. Many different battles were fought and many countries had alliances that altered and created a very diverse and complex war. The history of the war involves the Holocaust as well as the dropping of nuclear bombs on Japan. In many ways people envision history as events involving people, but it is likely the events that take center stage. Biography means the story of ones life for the most part. A biography tells about someone and what they did and who they were in their life. One could well argue that a biography is the history of a person, but not really history itself. It is a history of one small part or piece of human history. Emerson brings the two together, however, illustrating that biography is what makes history. He states, in the beginning, "Of the works of this mind history is the record...Man is explicable by nothing less than all his history" (Emerson). In essence, the history of an individual, their biography, ultimately makes up history itself. He indicates that man is essentially an entire encyclopedia filled with facts and honestly, without a human being and their biography there is no history.
