Situated close to the southern-most tip of Siberia, Vladivostok occupies a hilly peninsula between Golden Horn Bay and the Amursky Gulf. It is not far away from China to the West. Northern Japan is the next land mass if traveling due East from Vladivostok. Founded in 1860, Vladivostok has not had a long history as Russian history goes, but it has had a colorful one. Travelers will find museums, tributes to the past and statues of Lenin, as well as highly affordable accommodations and dining options. East Russia An organizer of ecotours states that "East Russia is a magical place. A place where wilderness still reigns and life in outlying areas still has a rhythm all of its own" (East Russia Travel Market, n.d.). A traveler and blog poster agrees, explaining that she ventured out onto the frozen Amursky Gulf where ice fishers were drilling and fishing shortly before Christmas (Exploring Vladivostok, 2000). With most of winter still in the future, this large body of water was frozen enough to support many ice fishermen assailing it with drills and their equipment.
