risk factors of high cholesterol. Yet, there are many Americans who have no idea what cholesterol is or whether or not theirs is too high. Unfortunately, there are an ever-increasing number of people who never learn the dangers of high cholesterol until it is too late. It is a silent killer that can affect both males and females especially over the age of 35, and surprisingly, it is only within the past fifty years that physicians were aware of the potentially fatal medical conditions that can result from having high cholesterol. Back in 1951, during the Korean War, the Pentagon ordered a group of pathologists to go to Korea and conduct studies on the bodies of deceased servicemen (Duke and Cavanah, 2002). The results were shocking, to say the least. The average age of these men was 21, and the autopsy reports indicated that over 75 percent of them had an excessive buildup of atherosclerotic plaque on their artery walls, which means that even at a young age, these men were at a high risk for suffering a stroke (Duke and Cavanah, 2002, p. 76). Shortly thereafter, the term cholesterol was coined and studies began in earnest to determine what it is, what it does, and its health consequences. What exactly is cholesterol? It is fatty material that is manufactured by the liver and is also received through foods (High Cholesterol, Heart Disease and Diabetes, 2002). Cholesterol makes its way through the body in the form of fatty proteins that are called lipoproteins (High Cholesterol, Heart Disease and Diabetes, 2002).
