of a century ago, today it reigns as one of the most dreaded of diseases and one of the most deadly. However, it is important to recognize that it isnt inevitable. While genetics and heredity play an important role, so too do lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise. We can make a difference in our own lives and in the health of our bodies by making rather simple changes. Therefore, understanding what heart disease is and how to prevent it is essential for all individuals. While technology in the world has made life easier in a myriad of ways, it has also contributed to the skyrocketing of heart disease (The History of Heart Disease, 2003). Prior to 1900, very few people died of heart disease, and it was during this time that most people made their living by doing manual labor (The History of Heart Disease, 2003). Furthermore, walking was the major form of transportation and nearly all other chores/responsibilities in life required physical labor (The History of Heart Disease, 2003). The combination of a sedentary lifestyle and a rich diet led to an increase in clogged blood vessels, heart attacks, and strokes. Heart disease became commonplace. The rate of heart disease increased so sharply between the 1940 and 1967 that the World Health Organization called it the worlds most serious epidemic (The History of Heart Disease, 2003).
