Clinical Excellent (NICE) emphasize the significance of communication, saying that "Good communication is essential, supported by evidence based information," in achieving the goal of patients making informed decisions relative to their care (Ghandi, 2007). The federal government emphasizes the importance of their field, as there is a current emphasis on encouraging health promotion activities, and this requires that health providers have good communication skills (Taylor, 2006). Additionally, effective communication between healthcare professionals is vital in achieving positive health outcomes and maintaining a high standard of care. Definition: Communication, in general, is one of lifes most powerful components, as it is through communication that we come "to know ourselves, form relationships and create communities" (Winston and Eddins-Riley, 2006, p. 5). Specifically, in regards to health communication, one definition states that this is the "use of ethical, persuasive means to craft and deliver campaigns and implement strategies that promote good health and prevent disease" (Winston and Eddins-Riley, 2006, p. 5). As these definitions suggest, healthcare communication encompasses transfers of information from healthcare professional to clients and also to communication between professionals, which is designed to achieve care goals. According to Health People 2010 guidelines, "health communication encompasses the study and use of communication strategies to inform and influence individual and community decisions that enhance health" (Thomas, 2006, p. 1). Relevancy of effective communication with other healthcare professionals: When there is a communication breakdown with another healthcare professional, Kowalski (2008) advises that it is important to try to understand what went wrong and how each individual contributed to ineffective communication. Relevancy of effective communication to health outcomes: Health communication plays a significant role in determining both individual and community health outcomes (Thomas, 2006).
