The western medical establishment has come to recognize the value of dance, music, literature, painting and drama in preventing and treating illness. Techniques such as guided imagery, dance, art therapy and music have become the tools of health care professionals in all areas. These techniques have much in common with the Chinese practices of Qigong, yoga and acupressure. Eastern methods often integrate contemporary medical practices with ancient forms of healing. The western medical establishment is learning to give the Chinese practices the credit they deserve for the benefits they are able to bring to patients. This 6 page paper examines the use of both Eastern and Western therapies with a foundation of dance or music. Bibliography lists 15 sources.

HeartMath, a nonprofit corporation located in Boulder Creek, California. In conjunction with Dr. Alan Watkins of the Department of University Medicine, Southampton General Hospital, Southampton, England, has sponsored research to examine musics effect on the immune functions in healthy adults. Their investigation was inspired by research that indicated the use of images (photographs or videos) to produced greater quantities of antibodies. The investigators at the Institute of HeartMath theorized a correlation between music and an enhancement in the production of salivary IgA, the first line of defense in the bodys immune system to intercept and fight off invading pathogens. What they found was that the IgA was significantly increased after self-induced, positive emotional states, but that it almost tripled after the introduction of music. The use of music to control pain has also been documented (Pouliot, 1998). There seems no room for doubt that music has a beneficial effect on health. Music therapy is identified by Federal law as a service related to special education, but often music therapists are hired under different titles or departments, such as psychology, rehabilitation services, activity therapy, creative arts therapy, or special resources.
