Relationship with Hamlet The obvious thought in our twenty-first century minds is that Ophelia and Hamlet must be lovers; if they were lovers, and she is rejected by Hamlet, after the murder of her father, she "just looses it" and falls into madness, because she is a "frail woman." Certainly there are those critics who believe that this is a truth. We will not take issue with that opinion because the marvelous thing about art, visual or written that has survived over time, is usually that it is open to numerous interpretations. However, if we do take the details of the play into consideration, plus what might be considered the "normalcy" of the Elizabethan times, we come up with another possibility. Ophelia was raised by her father and her brother. Her father, Polonius treats her as a pet, a pretty thing to have around, but still "a green girl," (1.3.101), to be taught and counseled no matter what her age. Her brother, Laertes, continually advises her to be wary of men (we can wonder if he does not want her to be taken in by men like himself, who his father accuses of wanton behavior): "Fear it, Ophelia, fear it, my dear sister" (1.3.33). (Is "it" the "truth" of men, or the "truth that is not your own?") We need to know the background of Ophelia, before we can get a clear picture of what the relationship might be with Hamlet.
