Many university towns have experienced this first hand with an increase in violent storms that have led to destruction from winds and flooding. Those turning on the news almost any time of the month can look at some university or college that has been destroyed from some tornado that unexpectedly struck. There has been a call from scientists and others for universities to take a more active stance in trying to reduce carbon footprints and to increase sustainability on campus. University of California-Merced, located inland, in central California, is trying to move toward better sustainability with the recent release of its climate change plan. With U.S. businesses and politicians all but ignoring the concept of global warming, many experts believe it is the universities that will have to take the initiative to prove how sustainability and carbon footprint reductions can, and should, be done. Its the universities that can lead the way, and that can perhaps encourage the private sector (and government) how things can be done when it comes to sustainability. The problem we face these days is that of greenhouse gasses, in other words, CO2 and other gasses that are emitted into the atmosphere and increase the temperature on earth. Though CO2 is not by far the only greenhouse gas to be emitted into the atmosphere, it is one that can be controlled somewhat through activities such as carbon offsets.
