the U.S. who are uninsured or underinsured end up either going without health care or only receiving health care in a limited fashion. This has led to definite inequalities in terms of health care delivery. Those who have more money and jobs that cover insurance costs end up being the beneficiaries of health care. On the other end of the spectrum, some portions of society care for the poor with free clinics and other ways to help in health care delivery. The class that ends up being squeezed out in this scenario is the lower middle class - families in this income group arent wealthy enough to pay for medical care, nor are they poor enough to qualify for benefits such as Medicaid. This is a population that ends up suffering for this lack. Health care is a commodity that doesnt necessarily conform to the general economic theories of supply and demand. For one thing, consumers dont choose health care necessarily on price alone - they choose health care based on a physician or other factor. On the other hand, as competition enters the market (in the form of for-profit hospitals), these institutions are criticized for cutting costs when it comes to health care delivery. For another thing, consumers generally make a choice of health care when theyre ill - or when they have an emergency. In a situation like that, if the consumer is uninsured, he or she will likely head to the county hospital for assistance. If he or she is insured, the stop will be the hospital closest to the accident rather than the hospital that has the "lowest price." ...
