Healthcare aids who are sent to Cuba to work with the ill must take into consideration many factors when beginning their work in Cuba. Among those factors are the prevalent traditions of the culture and what the implication is for the healthcare worker. OVERVIEW OF COUNTRY Cuba, the small island nation located ninety miles south of Key West, Florida is the largest country in the Caribbean island systems. Closest neighbors, the United States and Cuba, do not talk. That is, until recently. Within the last few years, sanctions have been lifted in the areas of food and medicines. Cuba, with its tropical climate has large mineral base which includes cobalt, nickel, iron ore, copper, manganese, salt, timber, and silica(Cuba, 2002). Most of what is exported at present time is sugar, tourism, seafood, tobacco and nickel. The most important commodity would have to tourism, based on how many people take advantage of its white sand beaches. It can be said that most of Cuba is still an agricultural Mecca and that in some parts of the world, Cuba is their largest exporter of agricultural goods. However, it should be noted that at this present time, Cuba is experiencing problems with its water supplies as extensive deforestation has taken place over the last century which have taken its toll on the island. Interestingly enough, because of economic hard times in the past, especially with the withdrawal of Soviet support, the sugar industries suffered as well as other industries. As a result most of the agricultural companies had to resort to purely organic ways of raising their crops. This could possibly be a niche market that could be addressed in the United States.
