argues, based on a close reading of an episode from the early part of the book, that Frankie took over at least part of the parental role to his younger brothers when he was only four. Discussion The book is an odd mixture of joy and despair, anger and resignation, poverty in material possessions but richness in emotional closeness. And yet its also a study in weakness; specifically what is generally called the "tyranny of the weak." That phrase means that an essentially weak person holds sway over a stronger one by virtue of the fact that the strong person needs (loves, wants, feels obligated to help) the other. In this case Frankies father Malachy is weak; he is an alcoholic without the internal resources to fight against his alcoholism. He has no desire to stop drinking and his need for the drug is so strong that it blinds him to the fact that his wife and children are literally starving. Frankies mother is the stronger of the two, by far; she does what she has to do to keep the family going. She stands up to Malachy when he comes home drunk "singing all the songs of suffering Ireland. Mam gets angry and says Ireland can kiss her arse. He says thats nice language to be using in front of the children and she says never mind the language, food on the table is what she wants, not suffering Ireland" (McCourt, 1996, p. 22). She goes after the lout (few readers will have much sympathy for the drunken Malachy) on payday, searching through the bars to find him to get the money she needs for food.
