sort of romantic fiction that was extremely popular in English literature in the last third of the 18th century and the first two decades of the 19th. More often than not, the backdrop for the story was a ruined Gothic castle or abbey. It is also used as a means to categorize certain forms of poetry or writing that is likely to focus on violence, horror, and the supernatural. In 20th century culture, it was used to define a certain type of would-be anarchist lifestyle often characterized by black, torn, mismatched clothing, theatrically harsh and opaque makeup, and attitude (it is a "style" rarely found in people over the age of 22). However, in reference to art and architecture, it serves to designate both a time period (approximately 1140 to 1700) and a style that was ornate and remarkably vast in terms of the building that pre-dated it. Ironically, the word "Gothic" was once used as a disdainful expression by Italian Renaissance writers of all art and architecture that was not Italian in origin and was therefore, as barbaric as that of the ancient Goths. Today, the Gothic period is thought of a time in which some of the most remarkable of Europes architectural and artistic achievements were created. Elements of Gothic Architecture Gothic architecture is not known for a particular degree of integration that would assure the best use of space or the most refine aesthetic. Instead, it sought to celebrate all that could be accomplished by humanity, most often in the celebration of Christianity.
