entirely unknown to those outside Africa. This paper considers the way in which he presents Michael Obi and his wife Nancy in the short story "Dead Mens Path." Discussion This story, like most of Achebes work, is concerned with the clash of what we might call the "old" and "new" Africa. The old Africa is tribal, pagan, believes in many gods and rituals; the new Africa is modern, Westernized and doesnt see any value in the old ways. (The unusual title of the story, "Dead Mens Path" not "Dead Mans Path" indicates that something strange is at work here.) That culture clash is certainly the main point of this story, but Achebe adds a character who could almost be said to personify everything thats wrong with modern civilization: Nancy Obi. Nancy is shallow and silly, and endorses her husbands position against tradition. The first thing we learn is that he is considered "progressive" and "energetic" and has thus been appointed as the new headmaster of Ndume Central School (Achebe). He has a good secondary education and some experience in the field, so we can also assume that he is not an extremely young man; he may be in his late twenties. Certainly hes old enough to have graduated from college, gotten his teaching certificate and then gone on to work for several years in education-at least enough to get noticed and promoted. His wife is first described as "young"; we find that out before we even know her name: "We shall make a good job of it, shant we? he asked his young wife when they first heard the joyful news of his promotion" (Achebe).
