times. Men and women clearly had their roles and to step outside them was often disastrous for all. The following paper examines gender roles in Shakespeares time through a discussion of his play Othello. Othello and Gender Roles The first thing that is perhaps powerfully clear in this play is that men are in control. They are the leaders, the players, and the ones who make decisions for all concerned. The entire play revolves around the power than man have, power that is strong enough to destroy the virtue and life of a woman who has nothing to do with their game. One author notes that, "One such issue that is important in the play is how the women are portrayed as victims due to men determining social organisation. This conception is supported throughout the play through the representation of men and women" (Brett). Desdemona, in the beginning, seems to perhaps be a woman who has a mind of her own, some level of power. She is a young woman who has essentially married without her fathers approval, permission, or even knowledge, something that was not done among royalty. A woman was to follow the words and rules of her father until she was married. Desdemona obviously was rebellious for "she chose the man who she wanted to marry and felt it unnecessary that her father intervene in their relationship. This act of independence by Desdemona tore away the gender barriers of the Venetian patriarchal society and posed a threat to male authority" ( The Role Of Desdemona In Shakespeares Othello). However, it seems that as quickly as Desdemona made her point, and returned with Othello, she quickly became the loyal and obedient wife.
