An examination of this story demonstrates that Marquez indicts the community far more than he does the two young men who actually welded the knives that took the life of Santiago Nasar. The basic plot of the novel is straight forward and relatively simple. Bayardo San Roman is an attractive and rich young man who comes to a small town looking for a country girl to be his wife. He is immediately taken with Angela Vicario, who resists his advances, but is persuaded to assent to the marriage by her middle-class parents. A huge wedding celebration is held six months later. However, after the wedding night, Bayardo returns Angela to her parents the next day because she is not a virgin. Angela is interrogated by her mother as to the man who took her virginity without also marrying her. Angela finally mentions Santiago Nasar, who is the only son of a locally successful Arab family (Bell-Villada 182). According to the code of honor by which the people in the community live, Angelas twin brothers, Pedro and Pablo, feel compelled to enact revenge on Santiago in order to redeem the family name. They murder Santiago with machetes in front of his home with a good many people of the village watching. The twins spend three years in prison before being acquitted on the grounds of justifiable homicide. Angelo, meanwhile, has decided that she really does love Bayardo and begins to write him weekly letters professing her devotion.
