one-time journalist grows with every passing year. There is a creative thread that is interwoven throughout Marquezs body of work - that of the individual occupying the role of outcast in society. Marquez himself has described his writings as the "poetics of isolation," and there is no greater example of this than his imaginative short story, "A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings." Although initially intended to be a story for children, it continues to resonate with people of all ages. It is a study of community and the conformity it demands in order to perpetuate its value structures, and of the people who unite to forge this identity, which provides them with the sense of purpose all humans seek. What is interesting about this short story is that the fictional narrative is presented from the perspective of the townspeople. This is identical to real-life society, in which the perceptions of people and actions are dependent upon the ways in which they conform to the standards that regulate behavior. As John Gerlach noted in his literary criticism, "The way the villagers treat him is ultimately the best clue to how we should regard him" (85). When Pelayo discovers an old man sporting wings in a sandy marsh and summons his wife Elisenda to take a look to assure he is not having some type of supernatural dream, their first impulse is to skip "over the inconvenience of the wings and quite intelligently concluded that he was a lonely castaway from some foreign ship wrecked by the storm" (Marquez).
