A good example of this can be found in the LA County Museum among the European collections. VISUAL ANALYSIS Georges de la Tours Magdalene with the Smoking Flame series serves as a brilliant example of his time period. Taken with religious symbolism, this painting is one of three in a series. In De La Tours painting, Magdalen with the Smoking Flame, one is drawn to the richness of the colors, even in the half-light. Marys hairstyle is simple and plain; her nose is long, as well as her fingers and face. There is just the hint of pregnancy about her as she stares into the flame. On the table rests a crude replica of the cross. This painting is the second of four such paintings by De La Tour on this particular subject. The first has the flame hidden as Mary studies at the table. The second of course has the flame smoking and Mary just beginning to show the signs of pregnancy. The third has Mary obviously pregnant and the flame reflected in a mirror. The fourth, there is no actual fire, but there seems to be an inner glow as she holds her child.
