He lists four potential characteristics, active-positive, active-negative, passive-positive and passive-negative and then classifies presidents through George Bush on how they rank. In characterizing George W. Bush, the current president, based on Barbers scale, he would be considered a "passive positive" president. Mr. Barber describes passive-positive presidents as those who consistently seek affection - and while they dont work too hard, do enjoy their job. These presidents tend to be affection seekers, theyre more interesting in knowing that everyone likes them, rather than doing what needs to be done. Barber notes that active-positives have an "other-directed character" whose life is "a search for affection as a reward for being agreeable and cooperative rather than personally assertive." Barber also notes that these presidents tend to veer between a low self-esteem to superficial optimism. Part of the reason for this assessment is Mr. Bushs career path. Rather than following one single career, hes bounced all over the place, from oilman, to baseball team owner, to governor, to president. In all of these fields (with the possible exception of his stint as governor of Texas), he has not made any grand innovations, in many cases, in fact, he failed at much of what he attempted. But instead of trying again, he moved to a different field, hoping to do better there. It could be argued that he was successful in building a strong coalition between Democrats and Republicans while he was governor of Texas, but unfortunately, that ability hasnt translated into the United States Congress.
