to day life has been completely transformed by technology. This paper considers what future trends in technology might be with regard to work, family, political processes, and education. Discussion Its never a sure thing to try and predict trends, but we can make educated guesses as to what the future might be like, based on current and past developments. Work: Karoly and Panis examine three trends that will impact work in the coming century: "shifting demographic patterns, the pace of technological change, and the path of economic globalization" (Karoly and Panis, 2004). They predict that the change in demographics with regard to the workforce will be as follows: the U.S. workforce will increase, but the growth in its size will be slower than in the past (Karoly and Panis, 2004). They believe the growth rate in the next decade will be approximately the same as in the 1990s (1.1%) but in the following decade (up to 2020), the growth will decline to only 0.4% (Karoly and Panis, 2004). The workforce will shift toward a "more balanced distribution by age, sex and race/ethnicity" (Karoly and Panis, 2004). Technological change in the workplace "will almost certainly accelerate in the next 10-15 years" whether that change is in "information technology (IT), biotechnology, or such emerging fields as nanotechnology" (Karoly and Panis, 2004). "Synergies" will develop "across technologies and disciplines generating advances in research and development, production processes, and the nature of products and services" (Karoly and Panis, 2004). In the field of information technology, "advances in microprocessors will support real-time speech recognition and translation, and artificial intelligence and robotics are likely to advance further" (Karoly and Panis, 2004).
