The purpose of this essay is to report on some of the hundreds of fundraising projects dedicated to the finding of a cure for breast cancer. Few people in America do not know that wearing a pink ribbon is intended to bring awareness of the plight of women who contract breast cancer. In fact, in all probability the greater part of the world knows this. Since 1988, Evelyn Lauder, senior corporate vice-president of the Estee Lauder group of companies, has initiated hundreds of fundraising projects for research related to breast cancer. The company has been able to contribute millions of dollars towards the efforts and have saved thousands of womens lives as a result. Echoing what doctors, scientists and others repeatedly say, Lauder strongly asserts that "Eighty-five to 90 per cent of breast cancers are curable if detected early" (Burns, 2000). As an example of Lauders efforts to bring attention to this fact, on October 3, 2000, Lauder had major monuments in a number of cities in the world bathed in pink light, whihc is the color of breast cancer awareness. For example, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, Australia had a pink shine in the evening and night. In London, it was Big Ben, and in New York, it was the Empire State Building, all casting a pink glow that could be seen for miles. Lauder said that the company was "doing this so women cant get away from the information" (Burns, 2000). October is breast cancer awareness month. Estee Lauder also sells Pink ribbons and badges to generate funds to donate to the cause. ...
