More specifically, by examining NAFTA in detail, it is possible to highlight the realist perspective and the liberal perspective to trade agreements in general. NAFTA serves as the largest free trade agreement the world has ever produced, and in this way can best illustrate these opposing points of view. Since its inception NAFTA has been the subject of a great deal of controversy. Essentially, supporters contend that its value is unparalleled in regards to the expansion of capitalism while detractors contend that NAFTA serves to only make the worlds rich richer and the poor poorer, thereby defeating the very purpose that it strives to achieve. Therefore, with the dawning of the 10th anniversary of this legislation, the world now reconsiders the power of NAFTA, its implications, and its future. The future of NAFTA indeed seems to be fraught with peril as the voices of opposition grow louder and stronger. And yet, pitted against the mounting globalization that is exponentially consuming our world community, it seems daunting indeed to oppose such a powerful force. Understanding NAFTA is imperative in order to be able to assess its value, both from an individual perspective as well as from a global perspective. What is NAFTA?
