know, or simply ignored. Evidence is perhaps the most important aspect of any given trial for it is what proves an individuals innocence of guilt. We rely on the evidence to point to the innocence or guilt and when evidence is missing there is a strong likelihood that doubt will arise and the truth will never be discovered. The following paper examines three particular cases and some of the problems associated with evidence in those cases. The cases discussed are the Central Park Jogger case, the case of Martha Stewart, and the Robert Chambers case known as the Preppie Murder case. Central Park Jogger Back in 1989 there was a case which held the attention of the nation. It was called the Central Park Jogger case and in this particular case it seems that there were five youths who confessed and were sentenced. Such a case sounds as though much evidence was missing, but that with the apparent confession of five youth, there was no need for evidence. Interestingly enough, no information was found regarding why the youth confessed or under what circumstances they confessed to a crime it seems they had nothing to do with. The evidence that has turned the case around involves the confession of Mattias Reyes and DNA evidence. One author notes that, "Investigators are nearing completion into their inquiry of Mattias Reyes recent confession to the crime and statement that he acted alone, which if true, would clear the five youths who confessed and served time for the joggers rape" (TalkLeft, 2004).
