This theory proposes that the relationship between personality and health can be explained using five models. These models are 1. the interactional model, 2. the transactional model, 3. the health behavior model, 4. the predisposition model, and 5. the illness behavior model. The interactional model recognizes the importance of the numerous occurrences that can affect ones life. The way a person copes with these occurrences can vary significantly and this variance is related to personality type. The personality that stresses easily suffers more frequently from illness. The personality that copes better, however, experiences stressful occurrences less severely. Indeed, an individuals coping response can even influence not just the relative severity of the stress but also how long it will endure and how frequently it will reoccur. While this model is captivating to say the least, it is also problematic to a degree. There is no consistency, for example, in the types of personalities and coping responses that always deal with stress the most advantageously. Neither is there any consistency in the types of personality and coping responses that least effectively deal with stress. The transactional model also contends that personality can influence the way one handles stress. It contends that personality not only influences the specifics of the coping response but also influences how an individual sums up an event.
