They were at the mercy of the male dominated health industry and as such had no option it seems to do anything but become pregnant if they engaged in intercourse. The best birth control method they could have was following their cycle, or the rhythm method, and hope they got it right. The following paper briefly describes what it was like for women in the 1930s as it relates to reproductive rights and health. Women in the 1930s Women today take their own reproductive rights and health very seriously. And, they often take it for granted. But, women in the 1930s had very little in terms of options concerning birth control and reproductive rights. They were, as mentioned in the introduction, at the mercy of a male dominated health industry. And, that industry did not necessarily think that a womans reproductive condition was something that should have special attention. In terms of a womans reproductive cycle and the chance of becoming pregnant, there were surely pockets of women who knew how to take matters into their own hands and this often cost them their lives through illegal abortions. While it is not something often discussed, or not discussed during the time period, abortions were available to those who knew where to look. But, it was a dangerous and life threatening reality for these women and the doctors that they would find were more often than not incredibly insensitive and uncaring, merely wishing to make a buck on some illegal front. Now, it should be understood that without legal consent, some contraceptives were available through very secret means..
