see a life of happiness and love. It is perhaps unlike any other Shakespeare play in many respects, but yet similar to others because the audience or reader gets a
powerful sense of fate and foreboding in the story. Despite the innocence of the lovers, the viewer/reader knows that tragedy awaits them. The following paper examines the theme of fate
and foreboding in this play by Shakespeare. Fate and Foreboding in Romeo and Juliet One particular author points out that, "We know from Shakespeares prologue that this is
a love doomed to end in tragedy" (The Shakespeare Resource Center). Despite the fact that the lovers are entertaining, especially when Romeo is outside her room, obviously drunk, and spouting
his love, the prologue of the play clearly informs the viewer/reader that tragedy awaits, thus illustrating both fate and foreboding. In this prologue Shakespeare notes, "A pair of star-crossd
lovers take their life...The fearful passage of their death-markd love" (Shakespeare I i). After this introduction the audience or reader is immediately introduced to turmoil among the two houses in
the form of a physical fight among young men. This sets the stage to understand that the play is not going to be a pleasant one and that tragedy awaits.
It also sets the stage for the viewer/reader to know the foundations of history concerning the families when Romeo and Juliet first meet. If the story had simply began with
Romeo and Juliet meeting, without knowledge of their families and the feud between the families there would not be the strong sense that the two were fated for disaster and
