A 6 page essay/research paper that looks at Gloria Feliciano's play "Between Blessings," which is a poignant account of a twenty-eight year old Puerto Rican son, Diego, finally telling his proud, macho, traditionalist father that he is gay. In this work, Feliciano's use of language and dramatic devices serves to expand the scope of the play beyond the immediate domestic situation between father and son and, in so doing, brings up issues of culture and religiosity, specifically the stand of the Roman Catholic Church on homosexuality. This factor of the play is achieved by framing the confrontation between Diego and his father within scenes that feature a family friend, Father David, a priest who is also homosexual. addressing the audience as if it were a single individual who has come to his office. Through this conversation, Feliciano introduces Diegos family, particularly his father "Papi," who is fond
of music. Father David also refers to his own family ties, and his bitterness at their rejection is palatable. "Yep, sent me away...like a misfit boarding the last ship to
salvation" (Feliciano 238). Yet, despite his hurt by his familys rejection, Father David seems to accept the stance of the Church and to understand the reaction of his family. "Hey!
Guess they had to do what they had to do" (Feliciano 238). As this indicates, in this initial monologue, Feliciano indicates the traumatic dichotomy that exists between Catholics who love
the Church and their faith, yet cannot deny their sexual orientation, which is specifically indicated by Catholic teaching as an orientation that leads toward "evil." Father David defends the Churchs
