systems in her particular experience. The experience of the student in question follows. She is a 45-year-old Puerto Rican female, a single mother who is a survivor of domestic violence. After being married for 15 years, she fled her husband, staying in a domestic violence shelter with three of her younger children. She ended up as part of the welfare system for two years until returning to school to receive her bachelors degree in social work. Unfortunately, what she experienced carried down to her children - her two older children began using drugs, with her son becoming infected with HIV. Though she remarried and joined a church, the problems continued, as her older daughter had four children, and the student became a "kinship" foster mother while the bio mother was in and out of rehab programs. Though the student has managed to pull herself out of her family oriented problems, the problems seem to continue existing on the next level. This is not exactly uncommon, especially according to the book Human Behavior in the Social Environment/A Social Systems Approach by Ralf E. Anderson and I.L. Carter (fifth edition). The authors point out a social systems theory, which basically states that a typical family is considered a holon (or unit, in this case), meaning that if the problems of one family member are to be solved, the entire family must be examined as well, but beyond the blood relations (or the unit in which the person is being raised). Also needing to be examined are the family members interaction with the environment (such as schools community, work organizations, other families and even the neighborhood). ...
