With that in mind the following paper examines two different stories, journeys, as they address simple heroism, heroism that is not unobtainable by the average individual. The stories, first examined separately and then compared, are Eric Newbys "A Short Walk in the Hindi Kush" and Karen Connellys "Touch the Dragon." A Short Walk in the Hindi Kush Newbys work is a very entertaining and intriguing work about a man who lives in England and makes the decision to simply take a journey; mountain climbing. He is a clothing designer and is not a traveler at all in relationship to such an adventure as mountain climbing and entering into regions of the world that are considered less than civilized in many ways. It is a very brave and very humorous look at possibilities. In a review on this book Monat illustrates some of the basics of the story in the following: "Newby, a Brit, was working in the world London haute couture fashion when he received a cable from his old friend Hugh Carless, reading simply: CAN YOU TRAVEL NURISTAN JUNE?" Newby was very eager about the idea and believed he could write a piece on it, a travel journal of sorts. "Carless was a career diplomat stationed in Kabul who had done a lot of travelling, and had been to the Hindu Kush before, but not too far in and not up any of the peaks" (Monat). His friend Carless simply believed it would be fun, without really thinking about the possible dangers or conditions they may encounter.
