BUSINESS AND THE ENVIRONMENT One of the most emphatic issues that has been in the forefront of business today is how businesses impact the environment. Where does the industrial waste go? While there are myriad laws influencing business and the environment, are these laws actually being enforced, and if so, by who? It can be argued that in light of what has persisted for the past century, contemporary corporations could certainly be more environmentally concerned when it comes to the pollutants their big business activities continue to emit. Critics have long asserted that big business severely lacks social responsibility, which is defined as a company that "thinks in human terms with all of its audiences, starting with employees" (Bovet 1994, 30). One of the worst situations to come from the boom of big business all throughout the twentieth century is the fact that little consideration has been given to the ravaging consequences of toxic manufacturing pollutants. No one wants to take the responsibility for the trouble the environment has been in for a long time directly because big business. Decades and decades of misuse, exploitation and degradation have placed a tremendous burden upon the land to the point where humanity is now having to scramble to preserve what is left.
