in many forms, even animation, as it retells the story of Ichabod Crane and the mysteries of Sleepy Hollow. In this work, written at the end of the 19th century, one can find many social beliefs of the time. The following paper examines the role of education and women in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Education and Women in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Education plays a very powerful, if underlying role in this particular story if only because the character of Ichabod Crane was an educator, a teacher who went to Sleepy Hollow in order to teach. Through looking at how the society felt about teachers, and how Ichabod Crane conducted himself as a teacher one can see the foundation of education in the society. The narrator states that the people of any given town greatly revered teachers because they were only second to ministers it would seem in their learning. The narrator tells the reader, "The schoolmaster is generally a man of some importance in the female circle of a rural neighborhood; being considered a kind of idle, gentlemanlike personage, of vastly superior taste and accomplishments to the rough country swains, and, indeed, inferior in learning only to the parson" (Irving). Interestingly enough, this also brings into play women, for the narrator does not claim that men think highly, or lowly, of an educator. But women perhaps, as the mothers of children, are more aware of the importance of education than the men and so their perspectives on this topic are of value in the society if for no other reason than because it is their job as a mother to ensure the education of their children. ...
