crime has increased, particularly in the inner cities, policemen fear for their own lives despite the fact that they carry more weaponry than the average person. In order to uphold
the law they must face hardened criminals, crack heads and militia groups. Over the years, the demands upon officers have increased dramatically. In a sense, due to the increased need
for education, training and counseling, the police department is experiencing a transformation of sorts. However, the end of the millennium is not the first time police have gone through such
transformations (Witkin, 1992). The police forces of today were actually created in the late 1800s (1992). Through the 1920s, cops in the big city were little more than corrupt political
men who used their authority as they liked (1992). It wasnt until the 1950s and 1960s that the position of police officer was deemed a profession (1992). Under the
reforms, police were trained thoroughly and organized into a centralized unit removed from the political limelight (1992). This ensured integrity. Crime control became the main focus partially due
to advances like the patrol car and the two-way radio (Witkin, 1992). The major part of the police officers duty became random patrol, quick response to radio calls, arrests, and
ordinary after-the-fact investigation of serious crimes (1992). At this time, police officers still had the respect of society. People portrayed in situation comedies during the era would stammer "Police officer,
sir" if they were stopped for a traffic ticket. There was a fear as well. But in addition, the respect was not solely out of fear. People genuinely liked policemen.
