THE FUTURE OF AIRCRAFT The future for the aviation industry is looking very rosy indeed. Because of the great need for air travel in the future, the next thirty years sees the expansion of mega-giant airplanes, and the skies are wide open. The military and commercial aircraft industries are changing rapidly by incorporating new materials and construction techniques; and while the traditional General Aviation market is bound by rigid thinking and expensive methods, a new market is emerging. These early adopters will usher in the new era of General Aviation (Wingco 2001). According to Steve Crow, an engineering professor at the University of Arizona, the future holds some remarkable things in the field of aviation. According to Crow, in todays world, computer microprocessor speeds are 25,000 times faster than they were twenty-five years ago. This represents an increase of fifty percent a year, and there are no signs of slowing down. Today personal computers have the power to monitor hundreds of variables on individual aircraft, and it is these variables that are provided by the orbiting satellites of the Global Positioning System (GPS) (Watson 1996). Known for his research on aircraft vortex wakes, jet noise, sonic booms, submarine hydrodynamics, and GPS guidance and control, Crow says that perhaps by the year 2020, the airplane will rank "with the automobile and computer as an agent of personal freedom" (Watson, 96-025, 1996). As a current professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering at The University of Arizona and presently on sabbatical at Stanford University, Crow is well qualified to make such incredible predictions ...
