It was a land of possible dreams and incredible hardships. The following paper examines early America and opportunity based on Paul Johnsons "A History of the American People" and Howard Zinns "Peoples History of the United States." Was early America a place of hardship or a land of opportunity? Throughout the colonies there were many opportunities to make money and succeed, with each colony seemingly possessing a different opportunity in terms of what grew well or what could be easily gathered from the particular colony. Because of this, and because of the industrious nature of the new Americans, many people did very well although there were hardships that were clearly related to such conditions as Native struggles and the struggles associated with a new and wild land. However, by the middle of the 18th century much was established and this meant great opportunities for some and increased hardships for others. In Johnsons (1999) book he states that "Most men and women who lived there enjoyed, by European standards, middle-class incomes once the frugality and struggles of their youth were over" (108). In essence, once the wilderness struggles were managed and a sort of stability began to emerge through all the various efforts of people, the individual, or many of the individuals, began to live far better than most people did back in Europe.
