focused on motivational factors for their employees. Having an understanding of what gets workers fired up to get a job done can help an organization reach its goals. One of
the original motivational theories involved Abraham Maslow and his Hierarchy of Needs. Clayton Alderfer, in (get the year), introduced a version of the needs hierarchy by describing motivation through existence
(physiological and safety needs); relatedness (social and external esteem needs) and growth (internal and self-actualization needs) (ERG Theory, 2010). This boils down to what is know as ERG Theory, and
it makes Maslows hierarchy somewhat more flexible by eliminating the overlap that can be found in the latters structure. We dont know much
about Clayton Alderfer other than the fact he is an American psychologist who was born in 1940 and who believed that Maslows theory of human motivation made sense (Alderfer, 1989).
In 1972, Alderfer introduced his ERG theory as a more compact and flexible way for management to identify a hierarchy of needs (Alderfer, 1989).
Much like Maslows hierarchy, ERG Theory points out that once physiological and existence needs are fulfilled, the next step is the fulfillment of interpersonal, or "relatedness" needs (Buhler,
