There are also rumors that the schoolwork is so intense and pressure-filled, students cave under the pressure and end up committing suicide. In addition, there is on the one hand the homogeneity of the Japanese a culture in which everyone must learn the same way, no matter what the learning difficulties (if any) and no matter what their intelligence. For example, children that show signs of becoming left-handed are corrected both at home and at school. Left-handed people stand out, and according to Japanese culture, standing out is not a good thing. What, however, is the status of Japanese education? Is it the rough, structured format that the media has in turn idolized and criticized? Or is the truth different? The answer is: it depends on what book you read. Much of what is written about Japanese education certainly does involve the bullying, the cram schools (for exams) and suicides by students under pressure. As with anything, however, the truth is probably less stringent than the fiction. In reading the literature it can be determined that, while Japanese education isnt the warm and fuzzy that it can be in the United States, nor is it the prison that it has been painted out to be. In their book, Education in Contemporary Japan: Inequality and Diversity, authors Karri Okano and Motonori Tsuchiya point out the inequalities that Japanese education can produce.
