is presented with two individuals who suffer greatly in different ways. They both suffer due to choices they have consciously made, and they both meet with utter destruction, because of those choices. Tempted by knowledge of one kind or another they ultimately find themselves to be lost men with no hope of reprieve. The following paper examines their individual temptations and why neither turns back when they are faced with the truth of the consequences of their actions. The paper also examines if either of them are even capable of turning back. Why does neither turn back when the consequences of their actions are clear? Is either one capable of turning back? One more so than the other? Dr. Faustus and Dr. Jekyll In the case of Dr. Faustus he is a man who has learned as much as he thinks he can through institutions of learning. He is still hungry for knowledge and will do anything to gain as much knowledge as he can. He is faced with a good angel and an evil angel and must decides, ultimately, if he will sell his soul for incredible knowledge and ability. "How am I glutted with conceit of this! Shall I make spirits fetch me what I please, Resolve me of all ambiguities, Perform what desperate enterprise I will?" (Marlowe). He consciously and actively chooses to go with the evil side that promises so much of what he desires. In Dr. Jekylls situation he is a scientist as well as a good man who is very intrigued with humanity. He discovers a potion that essentially brings out the darkest side of himself.
