In either case, the cost of the meal lies at the feet of the taxpayer, as have all the other meals this man has consumed since his incarceration on death row. To society, this meal is a number as has become its diner. And it is the responsibility of this society to bear the expense of not only the costs incurred in the care of this mans life but also the means selected to end it, for it was this very society who deemed that this mans number, in effect, was up. Capital punishment is in itself an issue that rages with heated and emotional debate on both the side of the proponents and the side of the opposition. It is not the purpose of this paper, however, to address the issue of whether it is right or wrong for man to take it upon himself to end anothers life. It is instead the purpose of this paper to clarify and underscore the fact that once societys taxpayers have determined that anothers life shall be taken by law, it is the financial and moral responsibility of this taxpaying society to sustain and support that life until it ends. It is my opinion that this is not only a responsibility, but also a moral and ethical obligation of modern society. For the failure to sustain life, even life that modern society and law has deemed to be unworthy of continuance, would make this collective society as equally guilty both morally and ethically as the condemned.
