marriages end in divorce (Jeremiah Project html). Many years ago, there was a definite stigma attached to divorce; that stigma has all but disappeared today. Many believe this change of attitude is the core of the increasing numbers of divorces and some assert that this fact is the most visible sign of the collapse of the American culture (Jeremiah Project html). Divorce has been shown to have very dramatic effects on the members of the nucleus and extended family. For instance, the economic status of women and children deteriorates significantly during the first year following a divorce. Children of divorced parents are more likely to participate in undesirable activities and often perform less well in school. The rate of divorce combined with the negative after-effects have led to a great concern among governments, religious leaders and other professionals (Sweezy and Tiefenthaler 47). It has also led to significant controversy among leaders when they ask the questions: what is the best way to deal with the ever-increasing numbers of divorces and what, if anything, will resolve the disintegration of the family unit. Philosophically, the question is how to resolve the conflict concerning divorce. This essay will investigate the latter question in relation to two religious/philosophical points of view -- Marxism and Christianity. More specifically, the essay will argue that the Christian theory is the better one to use to resolve the conflict surrounding divorce. In 1996, Ireland voters eliminated the ban on divorce largely due to the extensive campaigning done by Marxists in the country. The Divorce Referendum allows divorces under a variety of conditions whereas prior to this election, divorce was simply not allowed.
