The following paper examines the stories as they involve the pressures, influences, conventions and expectations that shape the characters in the stories. Divakaruni In Divakarunis story the woman is at first preparing for an arranged marriage wherein she will meet a man who may choose her as a wife. He chooses her and she moves to the United States, away from India and her family. She is frightened and confused, but also excited and the title of the story, "Clothes," indicates one theme that seems to relate to her identity and her ability to face such challenges to her culture and being. This is seen when she is on the airplane, alone, heading to the United States, when she envisions her clothing in her baggage, something that makes her feel safe when she considers the colors and feel of her saris. "Already I can feel my shoulders loosening up, my breadth steadying" (Divakaruni). She finds herself quickly adapting to the American way of life, and is essentially in love and happy with her husband. But, her husband dies and leaves her a widow and it is while mourning him and getting ready for a ceremony that she realizes that although she is still young and has no children she will not return to India but will remain in the United States no matter how hard it is. Her values seem related to poetic beauty an identity she sees in the clothes she wears, symbolic of her beauty and identity perhaps.
