Discussion As criminals move into the digital world of computers criminologists must move further and further into that world also. Many aspects of digital technology can, in fact, be of tremendous utilization in forensics. Consider, for example, speech recognition. Speech recognition is becoming the status quo in the mobile telephone industry, navigational technology, and many more aspects of our lives (Economist, 2007). SPEECH RECOGNITION HAS SEEMINGLY EMERGED IN WHAT IS A BLINK OF AN EYE IN TERMS OF THE EVOLUTION OF COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY. IN REALITY, HOWEVER, SPEECH RECOGNITION HAS BEEN A GOAL FOR MANY YEARS. BELL LABS, IN FACT, DEVELOPED THE CAPABILITY WITHIN THE TELEPHONE INDUSTRY TO RECOGNIZE SPOKEN NUMBERS IN 1952 (ECONOMIST, 2007). THE RAPID EVOLUTION THAT CHARACTERIZES THE MODERN STATE OF SPEECH RECOGNITION CAN BE CREDITED TO THE EXPONENTIAL RATE WITH WHICH COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY IS CHANGING. IT WAS ONLY IN 1965, AFTER ALL, THAT INTEL CO-FOUNDER GORDON E. MOORE OBSERVED THAT THE NUMBER OF TRANSISTORS THAT COULD BE PLACED ON INTEGRATED CIRCUITS WAS INCREASING EXPONENTIALLY AND, IN FACT, DOUBLING EVERY TWO YEARS.
