(1997), it would appear that in many regards it was the West which actually conquered instead of vice-versa. The reasons for this are many, but are essentially reduced to the natural environment and its harshness, as well as illness. Chardon lived in North Dakota and therefore his observations are exceptionally harsh due to the weather and rugged terrain. Furthermore, Chardon tells of the horrible smallpox epidemic which nearly wiped out many of the Indian tribes. This epidemic literally swept through villages and there was no medical treatment for smallpox so nearly everyone who got it died. This had a profound effect on the territory and its inhabitants. Susan Shelby Magoffin (1984) offers another interesting account of her experiences as she was the first white woman to travel along the Santa Fe Trail. She tells of the many dangers but also the many interesting experiences she has as she encounters many different people and places. In many ways, it seems as if her experiences would echo those of Chardons in terms of the West winning. Her life journey coupled her with a man who became her husband and took her with him on his expedition to Chihuahua, Mexico. What follows is the inspiring, brave, and courageous account of a young, pregnant woman on her own journey of self-discovery. She was an intelligent young woman and people who knew her loved her.
