and enlightened revolution". It considers the characteristics of Henry IIIs reign which contributed to the political situation leading up to the barons revolt, the relevance of King Johns reign and
Magna Carta, and the issues of factionalism within the barons party which caused the rebellion to ultimately fail. The paper looks
first at the changes which came about at the end of the regency, and the problems of favouritism and nepotism which characterised Henrys monarchy (Hallam, 1995; Flynn and Hoffman, 1955).
The provisions of Magna Carta, which had been adhered to during the regency, were effectively abandoned and the political control previously wielded by the barons was allocated instead to the
relatives and friends of Henry and his wife, leading to resentment from both the barons and the population at large.
The paper then goes on to examine the role of Simon de Montfort in the barons rebellion, noting that despite his early amicable relationship with the king (Gardiner, 1901) he
is later feared and disliked by Henry (Maddicott, 1994) and eventually becomes the barons leader during the early stages of the rebellion. The paper looks at the importance of the
Provisions of Oxford, the steps which Henry took to avoid conforming to them, and the factionalism which developed amongst the barons as conservative and more radical elements clashed (Treharne, 1986).
The role of de Montfort, and his political and personal ambitions (Knowles, 1965) is examined, particularly in terms of his contribution to the "enlightened" elements of baronial policy of the
