Giltman 8/2010 Please Written and directed by Tim Robbins in 1995, "Dead Man Walking" is a movie about a Roman Catholic nun named Sister Helen Prejean (Susan Sarandon) who not only comforts a convicted killer on Louisianas Death Row, Matthew Poncelet (Sean Penn), but begins to empathize with both Poncelet and the victims families. Poncelet is convicted of raping and killing a pair of teenagers and he is awaiting a state-ordered execution by lethal injection. Poncelet writes Sister Prejeans parish asking for her to come visit him and she does. A few days before his execution date, he calls on Sister Prejean to help him prepare one last appeal with the hopes of a judicial pardon. During those final days together, Sister Prejean and Poncelet become very close and begin confiding in one another. Although during their first encounter, an unremorseful Poncelet came off as extremely arrogant, sexist and extremely racist. It is obvious, while not at first, that he puts on this front to hide his insecurities. He grew up in an impoverished household so he does not know any different. To the chagrin of the victims families, Sister Prejean eventually becomes Poncelets spiritual counselor with the hopes of having him admit his crimes while trying to seek salvation for the murders he committed. Sister Prejean retains an attorney, Hilton Barber (Robert Prosky) to represent Poncelet with the hopes of reducing his fate from execution to life imprisonment.
