contains posh clubs and stores filled with designer clothing. It is the home of many movie sets and the subject of television shows. While L.A. may not be all that it appears on the surface, this glamourous image is not something new. It had arrived with the immigrants after the Gold Rush, or even prior to that. California has always been seen as a land of opportunity and the climate has not hurt its reputation. Yet, while this sunny disposition is the rule, the truth is that there is more than one optimistic group in L.A. Mike Davis, in his work City of Quartz, describes two cultural group in Los Angeles: the Boosters and The Debunkers. While each group is clearly different from the other, and they perhaps had emerged during different time periods, there is certainly some overlap. Each of the groups are unique and the author provides evidence of this. One example of the difference comes in the form of transition in a man named Willard Huntington Wright: "Wright would later, as editor of the Smart Set, metamorphose from booster to debunker, repudiating Los Angeless provincialism at every opportunity, while celebrating the invigorations of sexual promiscuity" (Davis 28). The boosters had been full of light and life and rather innocent. They were optimistic. The debunkers had already seen the seedier side of life and nothing would stop them from taking what they wanted. The Booster Era took place somewhere between 1885 and 1925 and was characterized by like literacy talent, the increase of land values, and health treatments (Davis 26). It seems as if people would go to the state for the healthy sunshine (26). Many are acquainted with the California Gold rush.
