Hume is the only major philosopher who wrote in English. He is also the only philosopher who did not directly discuss religion and God in his musings. His theories, in
other words, are exclusively secular. There is no reference to a divine creative plan, there is no reference to Gods will and there is no reference to an afterlife.1 Hume
made important and lasting contributions to moral theory, which became the foundation for subsequent philosophers. For instance, while John Stuart Mill tends to be associated with the inception of utilitarianism,
it was actually Hume who introduced the term "utility" into the vocabulary of moral philosophy. Humes theories of utility became the foundation for others, such as Bentham and Mill. One
of the positions for which Hume is famous is that we cannot derive ought from is, in other words, concluding statements cannot be deduced from statements of fact. This is
a very contrary position to take. Many contemporary philosophers, based on this premise of Humes, assert that Hume was actually a very early proponent of the metaethical view that moral
