Essay / Research Paper Abstract

This 10 page paper identified data sources that could be used to help identify a site suitable for storing hazardous waste. The paper identifies a range of data sources that will help identity characteristics of areas such as low population density, dry hard rock, near road and rail links and avoiding sites of special scientific interest or nature reserves. The bibliography sites 8 sources.

of being secured, that it is geologically stable, that it is close to road or rail links for the transportation of the waste and that the area has a low population density. The identification of such an area can be complex and the researcher needs to make use of effective data sources that are up to date and can be relied upon for accuracy. This type of data needs to be obtained from specialist suppliers as the starting point for the identification of a suitable area, however, it is after this that further investigation will then need to take place to verify the data and examine the more localised factors. In this paper we will look at the four criteria that have been laid down; the need for a site of low density, suitable geology, road and rail access and no sites of special scientific interest or nature reserves. We will look at these individually. 2. Low Population Density. The requirement is that the area where the waste s to be stored will have a population density of less that 50 persons per square kilometre. A good starting point is the National Statistics Office. This is a government organisation and is responsible for the collocations and storage of a number of different statistics, including population density. The main population page is located at http://www.statistics.gov.uk/CCI/nscl.asp?ID=7588&x=14&y=11 This gives main links. However the search facility gives more relevant data more quickly. Data by county and area within each country can be located at http://www.statistics.gov.uk/StatBase/Expodata/Spreadsheets/D7662.xls This is data that is free of charge and gives a good regional and local breakdown, figure 1 shows an expert from the data.
