This is all in compliance with the European Union Directive 95/46/EC. Under the 1998 version all records are covered, not only the records on computers. The act itself is very lengthy, with 75 sections and a total of 16 schedules. This complexity it has been argued that this is likely to means that it is less likely cases will be brought for minor infringements (Wright, 2001). This appears to be the case when looking at some of the more serious breaches, where most instances seen firms sighing undertakings (ICO, 2010). However, this does not mean there may night be serious consequences for a breach.
